About

Speaking & Listening is a community-centered program provided by the SIU Department of Linguistics.  The program is typically offered during the spring semester, with attendees meeting three times a week. Led by graduate students*, the course provides community members, whose primary language is not English, the opportunity to meet and practice speaking English. No minimum level of proficiency required, we welcome everyone and look forward to working with you.

Speaking and Listening Program

  • Eligibility

    Speaking and Listening is open to all community members and current SIU students. For Spring 2026, there will be a focus on high-beginner/low-intermediate communicators. The course intent is to enhance and provide practice to students, families of students, and community members, with proficiency in speaking English.  College credits are not available for the course.

  • Cost

    The program is $20 per semester. Sponsorship of costs may be available. Please contact us if you would like more details.

    Spring 2026 course details

    Course Dates: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays 3:30-4:20 pm

    Location: Faner Hall Room 1228

    English Level: High-beginner/low-intermediate

    *Course instructors are graduate students who are completing a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages(TESOL).  Click here to learn more about the Department of Linguistics and all the available degree options.

  • Parking Map

    Faner Hall is located just north of the Student Center.  If you are not a current SIU student with an approved parking sticker, you will need to park in the metered parking lot #13, east of the Student Center.
