Paramedic Education Program

The paramedicine certificate program, offered through a cooperative affiliation agreement between Southern Illinois University and Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, is designed to prepare professionals to provide advanced emergency medical care and transportation to critically ill and injured patients. A paramedic requires greater levels of knowledge and expertise compared to an emergency medical technician basic, the general prerequisite to enter the paramedicine certificate program.

We invite you to join Ascension Saint Mary EMS Department, in conjunction with SIU Paramedic Academy, for a 60 minute session that will cover topics from admissions, pre admission testing, curriculum and class/clinical schedules for the upcoming Paramedic Education Program scheduled to begin in January 2023. On event day, please arrive 15 minutes prior to start time. COVID 19 screening, and check in required at Main Entrance. A mask/face covering must be worn.

We have two informational meetings scheduled for November 8, 2023. You can attend the 9 am-12 pm OR 6-9 pm session. There will be a required entrance exam given at the meeting.

About the Program

Students enrolled in the program will complete coursework created to anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and respiratory, cardiac and electrocardiogram, neonatal/neurologic, hematology/skeletal, airway management, and extrication, as well as ambulance, emergency room, and clinical practicums.

The program is designed to produce certain student learning outcomes including, but not limited to, fostering a greater awareness of the basic operations of paramedicine, strengthening technical and communication skills, creating a proficiency in pharmacology mathematical skills, developing an ability to evaluate clinical information, and promoting behaviors consistent with ethical and clinical competencies.

Given the classroom and hands-on nature of the curriculum, program graduates will be prepared to sit for licensure exams offered by the State of Illinois Department of Public Health or National Registry Paramedic Certification. Courses will be offered in both seated and online/hybrid formats.
