About
Speaking & Listening is a community centered program provided by the SIU Department of Linguistics.  The program is typcially offered during the spring semester with attendees meeting three times a week. Led by graduate students*, the course provides community members, whose primary language is not English, the opportunity to meet and practice speaking English. No minimum level of proficiency required, we welcome everyone and look forward to working with you.

Eligibility
Speaking and Listening is open to all community members and current SIU students. For Spring 2024, there will be a focus on high beginner, low intermediate communicators. The course intent is enhance and provide practice to students, families of students and community members, with profiency in speaking english.  College credits are not available for the course.

Cost
The program is $20 per semester.  Sponsorship of costs may be available, please contact us if you would like more details. 

Program Schedule
The spring 2024 courses are M, T & W, Feb. 5 - Apr. 30, from 4-4:50pm. Participants must attend one of the orientation classes from 4-4:50pm on Feb. 5 and may register during orientation. All classes take place in Faner 3512.

*Course instructors are graduate students who are completing a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages(TESOL).  Click here to learn more about the Department of Linguistics and all the available degree options.
